Thoughts and a movie review

I haven't written anything for some time now, so I thought I should write something ( Not that anyone is reading ). This post might be a little bit longer than the previous two posts. Anyway so here goes.

Some info about what happened today
1) Today is Rakhi
2) Came back from office early
3) Wanted to have some chicken so I ordered some. (garlic chicken and kebabs)

Here is where I begin my post. Its 8:26 pm and I decide to go for a movie. Have to go alone as I am single ,no friend in Ahmedabad would be willing to go for a movie on a 5min notice, my sis has to go for college early morning and cousin needs to travel back to Baroda early morning. Although the thought of skipping the movie altogether comes to my mind but I go ahead anyway with nothing better to do other than watch Bill Maher 'New rules' on youtube.

So I start out at 8:35 pm for the movie. Dunno why butI think its become a habit of mine to never leave for a movie until 5 mins before the movie starts (Movie time 8 :40pm) , I think its because I live at 5 min travel distance from all movie halls. Anyway I put on U2 'Walk On' and as I reach the end of the stairs a loud 'What the hell' escapes my mouth cause its raining outside. So I run to a auto (still can't drive well) and start for the movie hall (fun republic). Although I swore at the rain when I first saw it kind of felt nice in the auto. Rain usually makes the roads sparkle in the night and the smell of the wet soil is always refreshing. I wished I had my camera with me as the auto continued moving. Reached the movie hall as with a convertible BMW with its top down in the mild rain crossing our path and speeding away. The auto driver swears at the BMW driver as he takes the fare. Reach the counter and what do I see a, a long line. Just my luck as its already 8:40 then. But I wait in line and get my tickets and finally get to the hall around 8:45 pm. As I check my watch while entering I wonder how in 5 mins I could manage to get tickets and reach the 4th floor at hall no. 6 as the line wasn't small. Maybe time froze for sometime.

Anyway as I enter I find to my relief the movie hasn't begun as the trailers are still rolling. In the lights I see the audience and I suddenly realise that I am probably the only guy who has come alone that to for a Sandra Bullock romantic comedy.... he he. If you go for a Harry Potter or a Terminator movie alone it seems fine but here I kind of felt awkward walking among families and couples. But I look different from the normal Ahmedabad crowd anyway and I think I am better than the people bringing kids to a movie in which they show a male stripper dancing and show Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds naked. In my opinion for a movie you don't need company unless its a really crappy movie then you need someone to criticise the movie or swear at the director or actor for the crap. Let me write a short review for the movie to see what kind of a movie this was.

Movie Review
Name : wth I forgot the name ..... ahh hmmm yes it was 'The Proposal' as if you couldn't get a more obvious name for a romantic movie.

But Sandra Bullock is a major romantic comedy star of Hollywood with estimated fortune of 85 mill (source wiki) who is what I would call an expert in these kind of movies and I have to admit are pretty good time pass movies with a happy endings. Awesome to relax after office or an hectic day for that matter. Today wasn't hectic so it was just time pass.

Spoiler alert here
The movie has a simple plot about a major book publishing company editor who is considered a bitch in office who is so busy that she forgets to follow up on her immigration process and is about to be deported back so she blackmails her assistant to agree to marry her in order to get a citizenship. Immigration officer threatens to find the truth- they take a vacation to Alaska to know more about each other - she sees his family - finds out he is rich - he has prob with dad and comes home in 3 years yet he seems so connected to his family :P - dad says take care of business I have money you are my only son - he goes angry as his dad doesn't understand him- wants to be a writer blah blah New York elite - rich little kid is angry goes ballistic on a boat - mom angry at dad - 2nd day family asks if they can marry tomorrow (are u kidding me 3 days and you get married) - 90 year old grandma says I have had 89 birthdays I wants to see a grandson get married -they say yes - some preparation and Alaska (trivia : Its not Alaska its Rockport Massachusetts) is shown as a beautiful place with dial up internet one stripper cum general store attendant cum priest. Bullock loses her strong woman image and cries and stuff - falls off a boat - dad comes to know of the reality asks his son to confess - Ryan's character the hero says no - But at the altar bullock's character Margaret has a sudden moral awakening - confesses and leaves him at the alter - needs to go to Canada next day - Guy realises he loves her - Goes after but misses plane - reaches office - proposes - they kiss - the end.

Hollywood Cliches used
1) Cute dog
2) Cool grandma
3) Naked guy and girl accidentally bumping
4) Rich guy who lives separately to pursue dream
5) Workaholic emotion less girl who actually is a softie
6) A psychotic Indian guy who gets fired and goes ballistic
7) A govt officer who acts like an idiot
8) A tough dad who softens up
9) Mom who is so good and understanding
10) A ex hot girlfriend at the wedding
11) A non native American with a foreign accent who has an idiosyncratic behaviour
12) Happy ending with hero coming and kissing the girl in the end
13) Credits with some funny dialogues which made the audience stay and block my path as I tried to exit the hall.

What I liked about the movie
1) The camera work - Awesome depth of fields in most scenes
2) Natural scenery
3) Sandra Bullock
4) The boats used :) Loved the boats
5) Keeping it simple and not trying to experiment with something which is nothing more than a simple romantic movie

All in all a simple romantic feel good movie.

My rating 6.5/10

Quarter-life crisis

So the day started as any other Monday with 'Super Monday blues'....

I come to office in some sort of a semi awake state thinking how to just finish the entire day as quickly as possible.... With my stupid daily routine mails, chat pings, calls and running around done. I finally start thinking. Problem with me is that I think a lot. Way too much....

I start to read some of the threads in Pagalguy forums. I am sort of a fickle minded person with changing dreams and goals. Anyway since my current new obsession is getting into a MBA college so pagalguy forums are the best source of any info for GMAT and CAT. Then the same question which has been bugging me for few months comes back to be.
"What do I want to do in my life ?".

Sure getting into a MBA program will help to get a better job and a salary but what after that. I even found a name for my current state of mind 'Quarter-life crisis'. Basically young generation in their mid or late 20s who realise that a quarter of their life they has passed trying to achieve all their goals and after achieving them realising they have nothing left to do. Nothing left to drive or make them want to push oneself.
Questions which I keep asking myself now...

1) Did I choose the right profession ?
2) OMG my friends are doing better than me ?
3) What do I want ?

Anyway.... These are somethings which I can't answer now. But I finally decided I need a break from work and I need to get out to blow of some steam.
Simple plan - Backpacking trip of south east Asia (Singapore, malaysia, thailand and maybe Vietnam ) Planning to do it in September 2009. Lets see how it goes.

Today I finally decided to start a blog which I plan to actually keep updated. In the past I have started 2 blog accounts and registered 3 blog names. Even posted in one of them. But I never got around to actually start blogging. So hopefully this is going to be my blog from now onwards.

Confused Ronnie

Deciding a name for my blog was a really difficult task. Finally decided to register a blog with my current state of mind :-).

About me :-
I am Ronnie aka Anurag aka Gogo. I am a electrical engineer by qualification and an IIM (Indian IT male) by my current profession. Passed out from Birla Institute of Technology Mesra India in 2007. Currently working in TCS since 2 years as a software engineer.
I have a very wide and varied field of interests and basically I just like to try new things. Sort of like 'Jack of all trades, master of none'.

I am a movie buff and love watching movies. I am a foodie too and I love to visit new restaurants to try out different foods and sometimes cook a meal or two. I love to travel and try to sneak in a trip every few months. Travelling and trying out different foods sort of go together so it works out pretty well.

General interests :-
I love to run , read books, swim, watch TV, listen to music, surf the internet, active in online forums, love youtube, computers and technology and also developing a interest in photography with plans to buy a DSLR soon.

Part of the reason I am started this blog is because I am very confused about what I want in life.
Will get into it as I start posting more.

PS:- I'm learning french since 3 weeks
